2016 duces share their experience of learning with The Tax Institute

For additional feedback, we spoke with two of our highest-performing students from study period 3, 2016 - Kelly Venhuizen and Terry Gan.

Kelly Venhuizen

Kelly Venhuizen is a Manager with the family and business advisory firm Chapman Eastway in Sydney. She was Dux in our CTA2B Advanced subject.

We asked Kelly about her career to date.

“I have spent most of my career on the south coast,” she said. “However, I moved to Sydney three years ago to further my career and education. During my time in Sydney, I worked at a ‘big four’ accounting firm, but I recently accepted a position at a boutique firm.”

“My focus has been on business services and providing relevant and practical advice to clients is at the forefront of my values.”

Kelly told us she enrolled in CTA2B Advanced because “an adviser’s education is never complete.”

“I have the attitude that we should always be extending and refining our knowledge to provide the best advice for clients.”

We asked Kelly what aspects of the CTA2B Advanced subject she valued most.

“The course provides valuable knowledge across areas of income tax, indirect tax and international tax,” she said.

“The key takeaway is to always consider all areas of tax to any client situation (i.e. if a client is selling a business, don’t forget to explore CGT and GST exposure and any available concessions).”

So, does Kelly feel that undertaking the subject has given her new confidence in some areas?

“The course has strengthened and extended my knowledge with GST and tax consolidations,” she said.

“It has furthered my confidence in minimising risks and identifying opportunities.”

Terry Gan

Terry Gan

Terry Gan is an accountant with D’Omkara Accountants in Melbourne. In study period 3, 2016 he was Dux in The Tax Institute’s CTA1 Foundations subject.

Terry studied commerce at the University of Melbourne and has experience in taxation and business services, with particular expertise in SME taxation.

He decided to undertake the CTA1 Foundations subject as a first step in eventually achieving the Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) designation.

The Tax Institute has a good reputation for offering great learning and development opportunities,” Terry said, “among which the Chartered Tax Adviser Program is a well-recognised course for tax practitioners.

“I would like to develop in-depth knowledge and expertise in taxation, therefore I decided to undertake the course.”

We asked him about the most valuable take-aways from CTA1 Foundations.

“The module provides practical and comprehensive information on the foundations of Australian taxation that is applicable in my day-to-day work,” he said.

In addition, the topics that gave him the most confidence were “the technical areas, such as small business CGT concessions and FBT.”

Terry told us he will continue undertaking the Chartered Tax Adviser program, along with attending other training sessions provided by The Tax Institute and other organisations.
